About

Sewing for Change is a joint venture between Sustainable Connections, Craft Talk and Creative Reuse Toronto, a not-for-profit organization leading sustainable change. Our goal is to organize and facilitate the creation of kits of homemade masks and other PPE (personal protective equipment) and to distribute them where they’re needed with our partners. Visit our Volunteer and Donate pages to find out how you can get involved, and follow us on Instagram and Facebook.

Background

As of April 2020, Canada has insufficient supplies of surgical masks and other PPE. Professional-grade (medical) masks and equipment are the most protective, but need to be reserved for front-line medical personnel providing direct care to COVID-19 patients. For others, homemade masks and equipment are a helpful supplement to other means of preventing disease transmission, primarily physical distancing and frequent hand-washing. For more, read the CDC’s information on homemade masks/cloth face coverings, and this National Geographic article on DIY masks and ventilators.
